Natural Solutions for Easier Metabolic Health

By Michelle Hurn RD LD | Author, Ultra Runner | TheDietitiansDilemma

Let’s face it, eating for metabolic health is incredibly simple, yet it’s not easy. We know that by reducing carbohydrates in the diet and focusing on protein, fat, and fiber you can see dramatic improvements in many areas of metabolic health. Sounds simple right? All you have to do is stop eating carbohydrates and sugar.

Why is it so hard? We live in a modern food environment where we are inundated with highly processed foods from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. You literally cannot go anywhere without being offered a sugary or starchy treat. The vet clinic, the office, the break room in hospitals, the bank, even the farmers market is flooded with cookies, cakes, candies and all kinds of sweet treats or sugar-filled drinks.

What makes the situation even more confusing is that dietitians encourage people to eat “whole grains” and “lots of fruits and vegetables” and even “sugar and sweets in moderation.” This advice is given to all patients, even when a patient is showing signs of insulin resistance (an inability to tolerate carbohydrates of any kind).

93 % of our population has insulin resistance. Insulin resistance occurs when the body requires higher-than-normal levels of insulin to maintain blood glucose. This means that normal blood glucose levels can mask insulin resistance. A person can maintain seemingly normal blood glucose levels because the body compensates by producing higher levels of insulin.

How do you know if you have insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance goes beyond simply having type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. It extends to many of our common metabolic diseases today including PCOS, fatigue, inability to lose weight, arthritis, migraines, dementia, anxiety, brain fog, not being able to go more than a few hours without eating, aches and pains, non-alcoholic fatty liver, and carrying excess body fat.

What can we do?

The best thing to do is to follow a diet that is designed to keep blood glucose stable and insulin low. This type of diet is very low in carbohydrates and focuses on protein, fat, and fiber. We can move as we are able— even short walks are great— and we have excellent data that building and preserving muscle is an excellent way to improve blood glucose and combat insulin resistance. Finally, managing stress and building consistent sleep patterns have been shown to be factors in keeping insulin resistance at bay.

What do I do if I can’t stick to a low-carbohydrate diet? The cravings are too much!

I recently discovered two incredible products that shut off the food noise and quiet the sugar cravings. These products have several clinical studies to back them, and Dr. Ben Bikman is one of the lead scientists on the research team.

The first product, Unimate, is a Yerba Mate concentrate that has 375× the chlorogenic acid of conventional Yerba Mate drinks.

Some of the clinically backed benefits of Unimate include:

  • Increase ketones by up to 80 % in a fasted state
  • Increases energy
  • Boosts the liver’s production of glutathione (the master antioxidant), which reduces pain and inflammation
  • Increases our body’s own GLP-1 production by 60–70 % (with no nasty side effects), helping reduce cravings and turn off the food noise
  • Increases endurance performance by 5 % and anaerobic performance by 13 %
  • Improves mental clarity and wellbeing
Next is the product Balance, a patented fiber matrix.

Some of the clinically backed benefits of Balance include:

  • The Cleveland Clinic found Balance reduced blood glucose levels better than the type 2 diabetic drug metformin
  • Studies from the Cleveland Clinic, the University of Sydney, and Dr. Bikman’s team highlighted Balance’s glucose-lowering effect and its potential to replace lipid-lowering meds
  • Balance has been shown to lower triglycerides and increase HDL
  • The fiber matrix in Balance provides fuel for good gut bacteria, improving gut health

These two products together are called the Feel Great System, and their results speak for themselves!
